This past Saturday, my new friend Rogelio took me kayaking in the Pacific Ocean to a couple of islands off the coast of Mazatlan. After we reached Goat and Deer Islands, we hiked to the top of the highest points on Deer Island and enjoyed the spectacular view and beauty that surrounded us. I saw plant and animal species I had never seen before and enjoyed a peanut brittle type snack that was light and tasty. The thing I enjoyed most of all was the company and conversation of Rogelio. My guide and host went out of his way to make our little expedition a great time while engaging me in dialogue about life, career choices, dreams, God, world religions, family life and Jesus Christ.
The trip itself was a lot of fun as we had to get out to sea through some rather large waves without capsizing and deal with swells and the wake from a fast moving fishing boat. Being in the ocean in nothing but a kayak is a sobering reminder of the power of the great Pacific. To me, this was an adventure, but to Rogelio this was a just another day in life. Rogelio is a tri-athlete! This guy is an amazing athlete who can out-swim, out-run and out-pedal me in his sleep! As I spent time with him, I found myself feeling rather humbled. I guess I'm not the athlete I once was.
After arriving at our destination, Rogelio asked me if I would like to go on a hike up into the rocks. I said yes, though I was a little nervous due to the fact that we were wearing flip flops which are not exactly the best climbing attire available. Well, our little jaunt was quite an adventure, and I can proudly say that I got a number of little cuts and scratches on my legs and feet! Oh, the glory of battle wounds! We reached the top of "Lion King Rock" and spent the next 30-45 minutes enjoying the beauty of the creation which the Scriptures tell us speak of God the great Creator, Architect, Artist, Engineer and Designer of all things seen and unseen.
John 1:1-3 & 14 - In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. So the Word became human and lived here on earth among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the only Son of the Father. NLT
Hebrews 1:3 - The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. NIV
I spent several minutes telling Rogelio about my own life and the story of God's loving intervention in this rebel named Doug. As I recounted the amazing grace of Jesus Christ to me, I was once again moved to such gratefulness toward my Father in heaven. I once was blind, lost and dead and now I see, am found and live a new life in Jesus Christ! As we talked, I was reminded that nobody can ever take away from me the power and wonder of my own testimony of God's revelation and saving grace to me. Though all the major world religions have much we can learn and contain truths about God and His nature, only Jesus Christ can deliver a person from sin's power and show us the only pure vision of what God is like. He is the Word made flesh! He is the exact representation of the Divine nature and the explanation of God! He is loving, good, kind, just, gracious and worthy of all our worship and adoration.
Rogelio and I rowed back to the mainland and were on the final stretch as we tried to time things so we could ride the last wave in. The key is to not get cross-ways with the wave, but to stay perpendicular with it. We were only a few feet from shore when I turned us a little too much to the right just as the wave flipped us over and dumped both of us into the water! Rogelio had told me up front we would get wet, but I was starting to think we would pull off this whole expedition with only the splashes we enjoyed while rowing through rough waters. Once again, how you finish is so very important. We finished wet and satisfied with a fun day kayaking, climbing and conversing. Thank you Rogelio and thank you Father God!
Rock climbing and capsizing! Nice! Reminds me of something.
ReplyDeleteKyle Lake, pastor of University Baptist Church in Waco, TX (David Crowder's church) was tragically killed by electrocution Sunday, October 30th, while baptizing folks. The death was attributed to a wireless microphone short.
At the funeral an excerpt from his last sermon was read. It really struck me as beautiful. Your adventure with Rogelio reminded me of it.
"Live. And live well. BREATHE. Breathe in and breathe deeply. Be PRESENT. Do not be past. Do not be future. Be now. On a crystal clear, breezy 70 degree day, roll down the windows and FEEL the wind against your skin. Feel the warmth of the sun.If you run, then allow those first few breaths on a cool Autumn day to FREEZE your lungs and do not just be alarmed, be ALIVE. Get knee-deep in a novel and LOSE track of time.If you bike, pedal HARD… and if you crash then crash well.Feel the SATISFACTION of a job well done—a paper well-written, a project thoroughly completed, a play well-performed. If you must wipe the snot from your 3-year old’s nose, don’t be disgusted if the Kleenex didn’t catch it all… because soon he’ll be wiping his own.If you’ve recently experienced loss, then GRIEVE. And Grieve well. At the table with friends and family, LAUGH. If you’re eating and laughing at the same time, then might as well laugh until you puke. And if you eat, then SMELL. The aromas are not impediments to your day. Steak on the grill, coffee beans freshly ground, cookies in the oven. And TASTE. Taste every ounce of flavor. Taste every ounce of friendship. Taste every ounce of Life. Because-it-is-most-definitely-a-Gift."
Miss you, Doug.
Greetings Dear Pastor & Friend,
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to share in your thoughts and adventures through your blog articles. I can truly imagine the smells, sounds, and sensations of your kayak trip - as will Mick (but you knew that, huh?). These experiences you will treasure. We hope you get to go again and again with each trip more enjoyable than the last with it's own moments and wonder. A familiar place that's always changing... isn't that a comforting thought for us all? We're so glad that you have this time to enjoy the natural richness of this amazing planet and more so, our Amazing Creator! Keep the images coming.
We continue to pray for you and your family and although slightly early, we are very Thankful for YOU ALL! Holding you in our hearts!
Hello Doug! I'm not going to say much, just that I really miss you Mr. That includes your family as well. I'm getting better now but a week or so ago I was talking to a friend about how much I missed you guys and it was hard to hold back the tears. Lord Bless you real good! And, I'm praying for you all multiple times a day. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteDoug--How FUN to be able to kayak in the Pacific! And to paddle out to Goat and Deer Islands and then to be able to hike up the mountain to enjoy a beautiful view! You're getting the refreshment of a variety of experiences, I see. I'm sure that's just what the doctor ordered.
ReplyDeleteWhat are the others in your family doing that is out-of-the-ordinary? I expect the Doctor ordered this sabbatical for each of them, too.
We miss you and your particular flavor at church, but God is also giving us out-of-the-ordinary things, too. Change can be stimulating and growth-producing for all of us--right? We trust Him to give us exactly what we need.
By the way, check some of your old pieces for later comments.
Love to you, Pastor Doug, and please pass it on to Peggy and your kids, too. Daisy
Wow!
ReplyDeleteTo be loved like I just experienced reading your comments! Daisy, Larry, Terri and Jim, THANK YOU FOR POURING SUCH LOVE AND GRACE INTO ALL OF US! I so appreciate all of the comments and the excellent reminder Jim. I know it is very tragic for Pastor Kyle to die in the way he did, but what a way to go!
Our family is having a great time of adventure themselves as they swim, boogie board, ride buses all over the city and enjoy some good food. Sarah and Stephen have been sick this week with Sarah being the worse of the two. They all really miss home, as do Peggy and I.
With much love,
Doug
You have this thing about tempting one to covet. I both envy and applaud for you. I praise God that you get to do these things. This is what (in my opinion, for my personality, and obviously yours) being refreshed is all about. I know that your whole family is experiencing this, too. To say I wish they could communicate, too, is to invite you to come off your sabbatical and enter back into our lives again, i.e. start ministering to us again. That's not my point. I just want you to know that we love and miss you, and simply want to know how God's answering our prayers. Patience is something we must grow in, so we can hear all about everybody's experiences when you return. Sorry to hear the kids are sick. I'll be praying for their health.
ReplyDeleteHey Pastor Doug and family, you guys rock. I am so glad you have taken time for yourselves and eachother to just get away and love life again. I must say we missed you however last Sunday(11/13/05), we were in town and went to Grace. It was really hard for me to want to come back, I have not made those types of connections yet here, as I have with you and the Grace family. Know you are still near and dear to our hearts and loved very much. Keep being blessed and enjoy yourselves.
ReplyDeleteLove to ya all,
Tracy
You lucky dog!! Enjoy it while you can man....leave no deed undone! :>
