Boxing Redemption for Oscar De La Hoya

I admit it!  I am a boxing fan!  I never really liked watching or getting into street fights growing up.  In fact, I once got my nose broke trying to break one up!  Nevertheless, I have always enjoyed watching a skillful boxer or a powerful brawler deliver blows to the body and head of their opponent.  I don't like watching fights get bloody or out of control, but I love to see multi-punch combinations and one punch knockouts.

Call me sadistic, macho or twisted if you like, but I believe God put something of His warrior nature within us and it is seen at times in sport and warfare (No, I do not believe God wants us to enjoy war or hurting people, but it is sometimes necessary in this current age).  Anyway, this past Saturday night Oscar De La Hoya put on a display of boxing skill and art as he knocked out Ricardo Mayorga in the 6th round of their championship bout.  This was boxing redemption for De La Hoya after a string of very disappointing losses these last few years.  I did not get to see the fight, but I have the 6th round knockout here for your enjoyment. To the ladies that read my blog, I simply say, "BOYS WILL BE BOYS!"

  2. Ya, there's nothing quite like a skilled fighter however....
You're going to have to graduate to the "Big Leagues" and check out some UFC stuff. Seen any of those lately?
The current fighters are absolutely hands down some of the most talented warriors I've ever seen!

  4. Haha! Too bad we couldn't get the pay for view like the last one. That was a blast. As for the UFC... Hands down the most enjoyable sport to watch out there. Brutal! The guys at work keep asking me when I'm going to sign up for the local contests.

  5. PERSONAL CONVICTION ALERT! I cannot do UFC. Yes, I admit I like watching it to some degree, but I feel wrong "inside" when I do.
I know I cannot put my personal convictions on others, but when I have seen UFC and others like it, I get the sense that I am watching BLOODSPORT and that I am like the masses in ancient Rome who clamored for blood and guts.
There is a line in my own heart that seems to stop with this stuff. I know, some may say, "what is the dif", but to me there is.

  6. You're just in a fog right now....I'll be praying for you to see the 'error of your ways' :o)
But, seriously...I just have the ultimate respect for some of those 'warriors' who are in absolutley amazing shape both physically and mentally and show some just as amazing talent with their particular 'skills'. Admittedly, some are nothing more than 'thugs', but most of them just can't hang anymore with the guys now who are really the 'champions' of the sport. It has really changed in the last 6-8 years and very few fighters have any 'serious' type injuries anymore because the level of expertise has progressed so far, and the careful eye of the refs.
Who knows; maybe one day we'll sit down side by side sharing a cold one watching a great match.....I can only dream, LOL!
Blessings to ya brother, we're missing the body and your teaching!

  7. I'm with you Doug. I love skilled boxers, but when it comes to UFC I draw a pretty thick line. The point is being pushed to its limit with boxing. UFC pushes beyond the point in my estimation. I've never been one to cheer on a street fight but have always attempted to stop them. UFC pushes me over a line of sensitivity I don't want to lose. I'm speaking for myself only, and won't judge those not sharing my opinion. Now if you are trying to protect an innocent person or a loved one...well that's a different story.

  8. I would tend to disagree, specifically when it comes to the UFC. The UFC is very quick to put and end to to the fights, and have very specific criteria for doing so. It isn't 'bloodsport' ther is no dipping hands in glue and rolling them in broken glass.... If a guy is down and he starts to get beat down, the ref is right there to end it. They are very very professional about it. The other thing about the UFC that you notice is that the vast majority of the guys that are out there fighting have tremendous sportsmanship. They help raise the winners hand, they hug and pat em on the back when they loose - most of the time. There are others, that do the MMA thing where it is not that clean clear and professional, those are the ones to avoid. I think if you watch UFC a few times, you'll see what I'm talking about.
For Marc and I, though, it is something to pay particular attention to on the safety side, as all of the little bangers and wanna be's are learning and imitating the MMA thing. Always nice to know what you're up against.

  9. Man.....I was hoping you were training for an up and coming fight LB; I think you could easily 'school' a few of them fellas!!
Lord knows, I wouldn't want to have to tangle with your 'dark-side' in a back alley! I'm glad we're friends :o)
A little off topic, but could you imagine having to have to battle it out in the Gladiator Arena??? Now that's some serious consequences for the loser!

  10. Doug, thanks for the clip. It helped me wake up this morning. I am an old friend of Oscar's and it does my heart good to see him get a quality win like that. As you know, I made my living as a professional fighter, since I have been out of it of 7 years now, it doesnt have the same appeal to me. I occassionally watch the big fights but often can see the affects of the wars that some of these guys have been in. I have mixed feelings anymore regarding either boxing or UFC. For some reason I cannot quit watching UFC when it is on. It is captivating to me I guess, I hope that is not a bad thing.
